My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti as they recover from the January 12 earthquake that has caused catastrophic damage in and around Port-au-Prince. Hundreds of thousands of Haitians have lost their lives, their homes, and their communities. It will take years to rebuild what was destroyed in this devastating earthquake.
I am pleased that the United States has taken swift action to respond to this disaster. Many of you in Western North Carolina have expressed interest in contributing to the humanitarian efforts in Haiti.
I urge you to visit the State Department's Haiti relief website, to learn ways that you can help.
If you would like to make an in-kind contribution, you may register your donation on the website of the Center for International Disaster Information.
Haiti needs our help now and in the months to come, and I will continue to do what I can in Congress to ensure that Haitians are receiving the aid they desperately need. I appreciate the support that so many of you have already expressed in aiding the relief effort.
